From Doubt to Momentum

Nikki Speaks on Confidence, Community and Courage

When Nikki Speaks first stepped into Independent Music Academy, she believed being an independent artist required complete self sufficiency.

“I thought it required the ability to create music on my own, lots of time and an overflow of song ideas.”

What she did not realise was that talent and ideas were never the real obstacle.

“I was missing the confidence to put myself out there. I was missing the courage to do something I’ve loved since I was a little girl.”

That shift - from perfection to permission - became the foundation of her growth.

The Hard Truth That Changed Everything

At camp, Nikki learned something many artists quietly struggle with.

“You have to keep creating and not be hard on yourself. It’s ok if you don’t know it all. Asking for help and input from a community like IMA is vital.”

Independent artistry can feel isolating. Nikki discovered it does not have to be.

“Independent artistry can feel lonely but it doesn’t have to be if you communicate and find your community.”

That realisation changed how she approaches her career.

Momentum Through Connection

Since camp, Nikki has intentionally stayed connected within Algarve Music Retreats and the Independent Music Academy community.

“I love that I am in the US and now have friends out of the country who I’ve had the privilege to make music and perform with.”

The impact has gone beyond music.

She travelled solo from the United States to Portugal, leaving her husband, children and family behind to pursue her dream.

“I went many miles from home but I had the support of my family who encouraged me to go for it. I didn’t have fear, only energy and excitement to see what creating and performing in Portugal would bring to my life.”

That courage has shaped not just her artistry, but her identity.

If She Were Starting Again

“If I were starting again, I would attend an Algarve Music Retreat from the beginning and be part of a community of likeminded people who are singing and performing because they love it and have a message to share.”

Being surrounded by artists who are committed, collaborative and growth focused accelerated her belief in herself.

“Spending time with other artists gives us the opportunity to grow, to be energized and empowered to continue creating and crafting our message.”

From Singer to Brand

Working with IMA has expanded Nikki’s perspective beyond performance.

“I have more confidence now and love the way every element of this brand and community builds on another.”

She no longer compares herself.

“I’m finally comfortable in my own skin. I don’t feel rushed anymore. I understand it’s an ebb and flow and I’m proud of my progress.”

That is the difference between chasing and building.

And If Her Music Were Food?

“Pizza,” she laughs.

“Every part is essential - dough, sauce, cheese, herbs, toppings. My music is diverse, empowering and centered on love. Every part of who I am adds to the flavour.”

Born and raised in the US, daughter of an Air Force father, wife, mother, wellness advocate, singer, dancer and traveler - every layer shapes her sound.

And she is still adding to the list.

At Independent Music Academy, we do not just develop artists.

We build confident, connected creators who understand both the art and the ecosystem around it.

Nikki Speaks is only just getting started.
